They skipped last week due to the holiday so I'm really excited about the coming episode. I haven't read any of the books but I'm sure I would love them. I'm an avid reader but have concerns that it would spoil the show for me if I read the books first. However, I've heard the show differs from the books so I guess I'm still on the fence.
If you read the books, I don't think it will spoil the show for you, because really, the 2nd season really has diverged from the 2nd book's storyline.
However, later seasons might feel spoiled for you, one way or the other.
I think that Charlaine Harris is a wonderful writer, and you can really tell once you've read the books what she wrote vs. what is being written by the tv show writers. Her storylines are very strong, whereas the weaker parts of the show (in my opinion) is the stuff she didn't write.
